Walnut blasting uses crushed walnut shells which are forced along by compressed air and gently break down the built-up carbon. The crushed shells are softer than the metal that makes up the intake manifold and valves so there’s no chance of those being damaged, but they’re hard enough to get rid of the carbon deposits.
